Fifteen years ago, when I enrolled in a PhD program in Biological and Ecological Engineering with the goal of re-engineering photosynthesis to produce renewable hydrogen, I had a very different outlook on the future ahead of us. I believed, as it seems a majority of people still do, that human technology was destined to keep on progressing, solving the pesky problems of limited fossil fuels and climate change, and that this would lead to a future of abundance and more harmonious coexistence with our planet and Her biosphere.
You REALLY short-changed the inevitable shortages of resources beside fossil fuels, and huge increases of environmentally destructive pollution. Not complaining, this was a good read. I remember (back when cold fusion was in the blogosphere) realizing that the heat death thing would be inevitable; just a question of time.

Thanks for sharing. Both this piece and the apostate one you linked to are good reads.
